It was the closest I had ever come to killing a man with my bare hands.
If Seton’s voice begging me to stop hadn’t cut through the fog of rage that had surrounded me as I beat that little bag of shit senseless, I don’t think I would have emerged from it. The sound of her terrified scream, the image of him on top of her were burned so clearly into my brain I didn’t think I would ever forget them. I tried to suppress the rage that was still boiling in me, just under the surface, and throttled up, feeling the cool wind rush past my face. Behind me, Seton’s grip tightened around my waist as she snuggled up closer against me.
Suddenly my mind flashed to what would have happened if I hadn’t decided to go to the bar to see her. When I got to the Cactus, Seton’s car was in the lot, so I knew she was working, but when I walked in she wasn’t behind the bar. The other bartender, a tall girl with short blond hair and a good ass, told me she was in the back on break and motioned me through. I was standing in the hallway, figuring maybe she was in the ladies room, when I heard a thud and a muffled scream. When I slammed open the door and saw Seton on the floor with that fucking pig on top of her, I swear to God I would have shot him in a heartbeat if I’d had my piece on me, and I’d be on my way to a jail cell right now instead of taking Seton back with me to my house.
The thought of what he would have done to her if I hadn’t been there made my blood run cold in my veins. Something rushed through me, a wave of fierce protectiveness, that I didn’t remember ever feeling before for any living thing, except maybe when I was a kid and my mom was in the later stages of the cancer, the chemo ravaging her body until she looked like she weighed no more than a baby bird.
I flashed back to Seton’s wide eyes looking up at me as she tried to fight off Wes, the look of desperation and hope as she recognized me, and suddenly it was Seton at nine years old, her unseeing eyes meeting mine as she sobbed for her father.
I wanted more than anything to be the one who made sure no one ever hurt her again.
We arrived on the other side of town, where my neighborhood was. I turned off the highway onto the side street that led toward my place. I had originally gone to the bar to talk to Seton about Cal, to tell her that he’d gone on a run for us, and that everything had gone just fine. But that would have to wait. Right now, all I wanted to do was get her alone, away from everything except just the two of us.
